How Humblebee got its name
Humblebee Cafe opened in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic. Owner Megan Tyler grew up Downeast, and she was perfecting her buttermilk biscuits long before she ever planned to open a restaurant.
Our building on Ellsworth Road used to be Peddler’s Wagon, the garden and nursery center Megan visited as a kid. The name tips its hat to that history, and to beekeeping, which she had gotten into around the time we opened. Bees work hard and they work together. Humblebee is a play on bumblebee.
Those first months there were no dishes and no dining room, just to-go boxes, a pickup window and tables out in the old greenhouse. The greenhouse is still where most of our seats are.
